Boeing has unveiled the “Bird of Prey” technology demonstrator – a once highly classified project that pioneered numerous aircraft design, development and production technologies during the 1990’s. New stealth concepts, rapid prototyping techniques and cost-effective 3-D virtual reality design and assembly processes were among the technologies pioneered by the bat-like Bird of Prey that have since become industry standards, removing the need to keep the aircraft’s existence a secret.

Featured in comic books since 1963, Dr. Octopus, or “Doc Ock” is an enemy of Spiderman with four extra robotic arms attached to his back that assist him in his nefarious plans. That vision of humans with extra limbs – minus the supervillain part – is taking shape at MIT with researchers adding “supernumerary robotic arms” to assist with tasks that ordinary two-armed humans would find difficult.

There are many tasks around the house or factory that you have probably said to yourself, “if I only an extra arm, this would be a lot easier.” Tasks like hanging a ceiling fan, installing an overhead light fixture, or even just holding open a box would be easier if there was an extra arm to help out. With that in mind, researchers are now looking into ways of allowing “swarms” of communicating robots to accomplish tasks that are difficult or even impossible for single robots. Harvard University recently performed an unprecedented demonstration of that behavior, in which a batch of over 1,000 tiny Kilobots arranged themselves into a variety of pre-assigned two-dimensional shapes.

Weeks after expressing an interest in designing lethal robots, the Russian government announced on Friday that a new military robotics laboratory had become operational.

Oleg Bochkarev, the deputy chairman of the Russian government’s Military-Industrial Commission, told Itar-Tass that the new robotics laboratory was “built and already functioning.” Bochkarev did not elaborate on the location or the operations of the new facility.

Russian Navy Will Have Robots Manning New Submarines


Nuclear and non-nuclear submarines would be armed with military robots.

The commander-in-chief of Russia’s Navy said Tuesday that the country’s new fifth-generation submarines would be armed with military robots.

“The combat capabilities of multipurpose nuclear and non-nuclear submarines will be improved in the future by the integration into their arsenal of promising robotic systems,” Admiral Viktor Chirkov told reporters Tuesday, RIA Novosti reported. “This has already been planned and these plans will be carried out.”

In 2013, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin announced Russia was planning to build a military robotics laboratory, saying that robots could be used to thwart terrorist attacks.

While they may not look as sleek as these “Transformers”, Russia’s battle robots, which weigh 900 kilograms, can wield a 12.7-mm machine gun, reach a speed of 45 kilometers per hour and fight for up to 10 hours straight.

Russia expects to deploy battle robots to protect intercontinental ballistic missile launch sites by 2020, Defense Ministry spokesman Dmitry Andreyev told journalists Monday.

Testing of the automatic weapons system is currently under way, and is set to wrap by year’s end, Andreyev said in comments carried by Interfax.

Andreyev refrained from elaborating on the finer details of the battle robot, which he referred to as a “remote-controlled firing system.”
