Last Christmas, Nathan Seidle’s wife gave him a second-hand safe she’d found on Craigslist. It was, at first glance, a strange gift. The couple already owned the same model, a $120 SentrySafe combination fire safe they’d bought from Home Depot. But this one, his wife explained, had a particular feature: The original owner had locked it and forgotten the combination. Her challenge to Seidle: Open it.

Flame-Throwing Drones Are Being Used To Clean Power Lines of rubbish in China

This Chinese company’s idea is practical; it looks incredibly cool.

Incredible new pictures show that a power company in Xiangyang, China has a creative solution to the problem of garbage hanging on power lines: flame-throwing drones. The drones are deployed to fly up alongside hard-to-reach stretches of wire and burn off garbage like plastic bags with giant plumes of flame.

Shooting fire at a power line may seem dangerous, but it’s a whole lot less dangerous than a human being pulling stuff off a wire 30 feet up in the air.

The photos have a pretty dystopian aesthetic The unmanned eight-bladed copters look more than a little like flying, flame-shooting spiders. But not to worry, these drones are used for improving our infrastructure, not destroying it.

Latest Drone from China Can Stay in the Air for Months at a time

The Caihong, or “Rainbow,” is capable of a maximum altitude of over 60,000 feet.

China has built a new drone plane that can stay in the air for months at a time. Called the Caihong (“Rainbow”), it was developed by the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics.

The uncrewed craft took part in a test flight in Northern China last week, where it set a record altitude of over 65,000 feet, higher than any other Chinese drone. (The world record for highest altitude for a remote drone is around 96,000 feet, set by the Helios Prototype in 2001.)

CONFETTI CANNONS TO BRING DOWN DRONES

There are lots of ways to dispose of a drone, but this one might be the most inventive. A YouTube user caught a drone getting fatally entangled while in the path of a confetti cannon. After this badly timed collision, gravity takes care of the rest.

The drone likely belonged to either the DJ’s management or the festival as these aerial cameras have become increasingly more popular at concerts. Although a confetti cannon is a first, other bands have taken matters more directly into their hands when it comes to disposing of a pesky drone.

Overall though, confetti cannons plus massive crowds sounds like a situation worth avoiding in the future.
