Lockheed’s Catapult-Launched Drone Called Fury Lingers 15 Hours Over the Battlefield

Lockheed is developing a new drone promises to be a long-endurance, high-altitude friend for troops on the ground, acting as an eye in the sky or a communications relay.

Fury, which looks a little like a pumpkin seed with bat wings, can operate for more than 15 hours at altitudes up to 15,000 feet. An in-house project funded on the company dime, Lockheed’s new drone is designed to give ground troops or warships their own surveillance or communications platform. The 17-foot-wingspan drone doesn’t need a runway to operate. Instead, it’s launched from a truck or deck-mounted catapult and can be recovered by flying it into a recovery net.

Lockheed Martin expects Fury to be useful in a variety of roles...

Apache-Drone Combo to have More Manned-Unmanned Teaming in the U.S. Military

The Textron Shadow unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has recently hit an operational milestone, becoming the first of the U.S. Army’s mid-range (or Group III) drones to fly one million hours. The aircraft have been clocking in some serious hours in Iraq, working in tandem with Apache attack helicopters in the fight against ISIS.

So far, the teams have been doing “very well.”

“We are starting our after-action reviews with them, from an Apache standpoint and a Shadow standpoint,” said. Lt. Col. Tory Burgess. “The information that we’re getting back is that the Shadows performed very well.”

The newest Navy Marine Corps UAV can take off and land from a small area on the battlefield, where its customizable payload of sensors will give Marines the best real-time tactical picture they’ve ever had.

The RQ-21A Blackjack has a 16-foot wingspan and can take off and land in a 40- by 40-foot area. Built by Insitu, the Blackjack can carry larger, more diverse intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) payloads than its predecessors. The aircraft deployed to Afghanistan earlier this month. There, dedicated UAV squadron detachments will fly it from forward operating bases close to the battlefield.

Learning to Fly Your Personal Spy Drone: DJI Phantom 2 Vision. Watch video.

PopMech takes the Phantom 2 to Central Park, where we get the hang of flying a drone and operating its camera at the same time.

Price: $1199

This recently released quadrotor isn’t designed to deliver best-selling novels or any other online-ordered cargo from the warehouse to your doorstep. But, theoretically at least, it could go looking for, say, an Amazon Prime Air delivery that’s gone MIA. That’s because the Phantom 2, which is simple to assemble and operate even for a drone rookie like me, has a Wi-Fi HD camera slung beneath its body that you can monitor and manipulate via an app on your iOS or Android smartphone. (Hey, I see the Amazon delivery drone that has my book, in a holding pattern 5 blocks east of my house.)

We recently got our hands on this commercial drone from Shenzhen-bas...

TSA deploys drones to watch you from space

Citing the ongoing domestic terrorist threat (aka, the “most dire threat to national security since Grandma Betty at the airport”), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has deployed a fleet of drones with the ability to destroy dangerous contraband like baby formula and remotely monitor “shady individuals” like 10-year-olds, grandparents, and those in wheelchairs – all from nearly 10,000 miles above sea level in the upper reaches of the exosphere.

The MQ-7 Peeping Tom will monitor the population and annihilate dangerous substances that could pose an extreme threat to national security like baby formula and H20.

A TSA spokesman called the new program a “cost-effective way to keep tabs on the population”, and though details on the MQ-7 Peeping Tom are scarce, a few sni...

IRAN FIGHTER INTERCEPTS US WAR SPY DRONE OVER PERSIAN GULF

PERSIAN GULF US WAR DRONE CONFRONTED BY IRAN FIGHTER

WASHINGTON: An Iranian fighter jet tried to intercept a US Predator drone over the Persian Gulf but backed off after encountering two US military aircraft, the Pentagon says.

No shots were fired in the confrontation on Wednesday, officials said, but the United States renewed a vow that it would protect its forces in the region.

The Pentagon initially said one of the US aircraft discharged a flare as a warning to the Iranian plane but officials later said no flare was let off.

The incident, which the Pentagon said took place over ”international waters,” highlighted the tensions between the two arch-foes and the risks of an accidental clash escalating into a serious crisis.

THE DRONE CULTURE IN REPORTING VIA FLYING CAMS

SPY DRONE CAMERAS MOVE INTO MAIN STREAM

But while some major TV networks are already putting the new technology to the test for the screen, there are fears the devices could also be used to replace the paparazzi’s prying long lenses.

”Kate Middleton and many other people besides can rest assured that their bare breasts are fair game, anywhere, any time,” the Australian Privacy Foundation’s Roger Clarke warned, in a week when snaps of the pregnant Duchess in a bikini made international headlines.

Fox Sports began using drones for aerial coverage of Twenty20 Big Bash cricket last year, while the Nine Network has conducted similar experiments at Perth’s WACA ground in Australia.

ARMY SERVICES DRONES AT WORK IN WAR ZONES

TINY SPY DRONES IN THE THEATRE OF WAR IN THIS ARTICLE

Each UAV measures just 4 x 1 inches (10 x 2.5cm) and weighs a mere 0.6 ounces (16 grams), making it easy for troops to carry along with the rest of their gear. A built-in camera transmits live video and still images to a handheld control unit at a range of up to half a mile (800 meters).

The Black Hornet Nano flies like a mini helicopter, but is stable enough to withstand harsh conditions and heavy wind. On a full charge, the tiny UAV can fly up to 30 minutes at a top speed of 22 mph (35 km/h), giving soldiers on the ground ample time to quickly survey an area. An operator can also use the control unit to pilot the drone directly or input a set of GPS coordinates for it to follow on its own.
